love letter 01 — from us to clairosphere

july 2022

What guides your art, and your relationship to love, fashion, & spirit?

Being primarily a ceramic artist curiously lends itself to a wide array of multimedia work, which is something that I'm becoming more charmed by.

In as many ways as this genre is "neo" it is also, for me, very re-cyclical (in so many words, it's a lot like recycling). Lately, I have let my eleven-year-old self take the lead in what I like and what I make. She was a girl obsessed with mythical, medieval, fantasy, and fairytale. She burned through any dragon-related book she could get and kept the Grimm Brothers, Hans Christen Andersen, and Poe on hand. I channel her in my work in a lot of ways,

Religious artwork appeals to me by similar means~ paintings, sculpture, stained glass, and (especially) architecture impart a sense of sentimentality. The symbolism and traditions are particularly compelling, and I see a lot of love in church artwork from the 12th to the 16th centuries. My infatuation correlates to the literature I was consuming during my middle school age and my childhood in a more broad sense. Having the context of religion and spirit is consistently central to my sense of self, and consequently my work.

Fashion to me has become somewhat of an enigma in recent years. My sister went to fashion school, and my mother is a seamstress, so in a lot of ways it feels homey, but somehow still just out of reach. I learned to knit in 2007ish but really found crochet and knitwork in 2020 which suddenly made sense to me, and I realized it was because, unlike sewing, fiberwork is a lot like sculpting. It's now a key element in my practice that I incorporate into my sculpture. As for my personal sense of fashion, I think my time spent in the studio has corroded my eye for style because I am now, unironically, cargo pants + work boot's biggest fan.
